Staring outside the windows of my NYC office building, New York looks like it’s experiencing sunny, spring-like weather. But I’m not naïve enough to think that winter is finished with me. No, we’re officially in that weird time between winter and spring—which is, in my opinion, the most problematic to dress for.

If you’re at all like me, you’ve got some cute sandals and summer shoes in your closet (or your online shopping cart) that you’re anxious to bust out. My proposed solution? Wear them with a pair of socks. Not only is it very on-trend (socks and shoes were all over the spring runways), but it’s also a cheap and easy way to add some versatility to your wardrobe. For styling ideas, I’ve enlisted four ELLE staffers to show you how to wear it.

Stephanie Sanchez, Fashion Assistant

“Socks are the perfect way to break in your spring sandals early! These shimmery ones are subtle but unexpected. Since the socks and the bright white sandals make a bit of a statement, I kept the rest of my outfit toned down with simple color-blocking.”

“I went for double-layering with this look and brought out two of my favorite spring pieces. A light slip dress on top of a turtleneck and cool sandals with socks. Done and done!”

“I tend to keep my outfits really simple, I’m almost always in jeans, a turtleneck, and a super functional heel. These fishnet socks and my pink beret are the perfect accessories to make things interesting.”

“I’m a big fan of any easy one-piece that you can throw on. This mechanic suit is really simple, so I like to dress it up with statement shoes. These Pierre Hardy sandals are so cool, so why limit them to one season?”
